How often do you return home from work to find yourself doing a "second shift" of housework and shopping? You know, the things that need to be done, as opposed to the things you want to do. How many weekends are spent cleaning the house rather than doing the things you enjoy like spending time with friends and family or going for a walk in nature? Do you find yourself stressing over trying to manage too many things at a time?
According to a recent experiment, most of us are very reluctant to accept help and would rather spend the money on material items. It seems that less than third of us spend money to buy ourselves time, even if we can afford it.
Psychologists from the US, Canada and the Netherlands asked 6,000 adults to participate in an experiment, where one week they spent an allotted amount of money on purchases that could save time, like paying someone to do their errands or clean their house, and another week on purchasing material goods like clothes or wine. The results of the experiment found that those who spent money on time saving purchases increased their happiness by reducing the stress of trying to juggle too many things at a time.
Psychologists claim that stressing over lack of time causes lower well-being and even contributes to anxiety and insomnia. The whole practice turns into a big circle, in which we end up unhappy and can even suffer from some serious health issues.
